There's Always a Scare...

The day after we were given the "all clear" at the second doctor appointment, I received a call at 8:30 AM from the pediatrician. Apparently, the blood work from the NICU finally came back and there were issues with Luke's thyroid levels. Because this can be a big indicator of a congenital thyroid problem, they told us that it was imperative for us to get his blood taken that day. To put it bluntly, they scared me to death. I called Dust, who had finally gotten back to work, and told him. He worked it out that Dr.Farrah would cover Dustin's patients that morning so that he could come get us and take us to get blood work done. The ped sent us to a local lab. This is when the goose chase began...

Although the lab doesn't do routine work on infants (you'd think the pediatrician would have known that...) they attempted and failed to get a vein.

Once they decided they were unable to do what we needed, they called our pediatrician who made a bunch of calls to get us into the PICU at the hospital. After a hundred miscommunications and trips to the hospital (long story after long story) we simply went to work with Dust until our appointment at the PICU. Dustin was unable to miss more patients so I drove (oops) Luke and myself back to the hospital. There was more incompetence at the hospital but I will fast forward through the 2 more hours of crazy and tell you that the PICU nurse was great, got the blood we needed and we were on our way.

Hangin in Daddy's rehab room!

Blood draw complete!

That evening, we did not hear the results from our pediatrician. We were not impressed. Long story short, Dustin called the hospital and was connected to the PICU. He dropped the title "Dr. Dustin Bledsoe" for the first time ever (he's much too modest) and they were able to give him the results. Everything was perfect! There was nothing to worry about. Apparently Luke's blood levels had been drawn too early in the NICU and had since evened out :)

This was the most frustrating day but our baby was perfect and we were able to sleep well :)

  1. Thank God Luke is OK - so sorry you had to go thru all this & be worried & anxious.
Praying that Luke will be strong & healthy from this day forward.
