Luke: Day 3

Day 3 (Thursday) was the worst for me, recovery wise, and it was also the most frustrating. We were so ready to take LB home and no one seemed to have answers. The new concern of the day was jaundice. We knew that Luke had to stay in the NICU until his antibiotics ran their course but that was over with on this day so not being able to take him home was horribly frustrating. All of the tubes were gone now and the only thing still attached to him were the monitors which is a NICU requirement. After expressing our frustration to the nurse, the doctor came by and said that Luke's bilirubin was higher than it had been and so they needed to keep an eye on it. He said that if Friday it was the same or better, he would be discharged Friday morning. He also said that the likelihood of this was very high so this was good news. The next bit of good news was that I was being discharged and would be able to stay in a NICU nesting room that was right outside the unit. Also, LB would  be able to stay with me! It would be our first night together!

After the doctor left, we spent the morning with Luke and fed him every meal on this day which was a wonderful feeling! At noon, we went to our discharge class. During the class I got horribly ill and had the shakes. I couldn't shake it and afterward, Dust wheeled me up to my room. I spent the afternoon in bed trying to hydrate and feel better so that I could stay downstairs that night.

That day, Dust picked Bean up a little early and we spent the evening in my room and in shifts with Luke. Xavier still had not met Luke at this time due to NICU rules, which was heartbreaking. That evening, however, Luke was brought up to the nursery on my floor for his circumcision. Dust was coming up with Luke and his nurse at this time and I was able to get Bean to the elevator just in time for them to meet! It was brief but beautiful :)

That evening after I was discharged from upstairs, Dust went to pick up my meds and settled me into my new room downstairs. The boys headed home and LB and I spent our first night together :)
